If you use a mobility scooter, you might want to use public transport to travel slightly further. While this can be daunting, being in a mobility scooter shouldn’t stop you from venturing where you want to go. The key to a smooth and stress-free public transport journey with a vehicle is planning. Accessible facilities and step-free travel has become more widely available, however preparing yourself is important. Here is a guide to using public transport confidently with your mobility scooter.
Travelling By Bus
Nowadays, most modern buses accommodate mobility scooters and wheelchairs with designated spaces for these vehicles and ramps for boarding the bus. However, only Class 2 mobility scooters are allowed on buses according to the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT). Some operators may allow class 3 scooters, but you would need to clarify his before travelling. There is also size and weight restrictions for buses that you should be aware of:
- Maximum weight of 300kg
- Maximum 1000mm long and 600mm wide
- Turning radius of no more than 1200mm
If you’re using an older bus or coach, then you might want to check if they have a ramp or wheelchair lift suitable for you. If eligible, you can also apply for a disabled bus pass to save money.
Travelling By Train
Before travelling by train, you should check that you are able to travel with your mobility scooter depending on what train company you’re using. Each train company has slightly different weight and dimension restrictions, but most accommodate a maximum weight of 300kg and 120cm length, 70cm width. All UK trains have designated areas and seats for disabled passengers.
On the National Rail website, you can book any assistance you might need before travelling – whether that’s at stations or on the trains themselves. It’s important to note that if you need to travel underground, many stations still don’t have step-free access or lifts so you should check before planning your route.
How to Make Sure Your Journey Runs Smoothly
Planning and preparing for your journey is the best way to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. This will help reduce the risk of any issues or stress that might happen with no preparation. By planning each step of your travels, you can also ensure everywhere you go is accessible for your mobility scooter.
If possible, try and avoid rush hour as this can make it harder for you to find space for your vehicle. This can also be more stressful with busier platforms or when using lifts or ramps. Make sure your scooter’s battery is sufficiently charged before you leave, and if your journey is going to be longer it might be useful to bring a spare with you just in case.
