If you’re a mobility scooter user or are thinking about purchasing one, you might be unsure on public transport rules that apply to you.
You can travel by bus if you’re a scooter user, but it’s important to make sure you have the right credentials before you travel, so you’re not caught short.
Mobility Scooter Bus Rules
The majority of UK bus companies follow the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT) guidance. This outlines a code of practice that refers to the use of mobility scooters of public transport. There are specific length, width and weight limits that you must follow for safety reasons.
The limits are:
– Maximum weight of 300kg
– Maximum 1000mm long and 600mm wide
– Turning radius of no more than 1200mm
Be aware that if you have a Class 3 mobility scooter (8mph), it is likely to be large and may not be accepted on a bus.
Do I Need a Permit For My Class 2 Mobility Scooter?
As a passenger, if you own a Class 2 mobility scooter, you will require a standard permit to travel. This is so that your vehicle is deemed suitable on board and confirmation that you, as a user, can properly control and manoeuvre it.
Once on board a bus, all mobility scooters are to be parked in the designated wheelchair space, reversing into it. Users will also need to remain on their scooters while on the bus, using the handrails provided to assist with stability.
What Happens If I Don’t Have a Permit?
Without a permit, you can be refused entry on a bus. There is no legal requirement for buses to carry mobility scooters which are carried at each operator’s individual discretion.
It’s important to note that permits only last 2 years, so remember to renew it in order to continue using the bus service with your class 2 mobility scooter.
How Do I Obtain a Permit?
To receive a permit, you will need to be assessed and shown how to get on and off the bus ramp by a trained operator. Once it has been approved that these movements can be performed safely and in a timely manner, a permit will be issued.
The assessment usually lasts 30 minutes. If you’re Suffolk-local, you can complete this at the following locations:
• First Bus – Gordon Road NR32 1NL
• Border Bus – Unit 3, Moor Business Park, Ellough NR34 7TQ
To find out more information, visit the First Bus or Norfolk County Council website. Alternatively, if you have any questions, reach out to Border Bus on 01502 714565 or 07876 286730 and ask for Phil.
