Can You Take a Fold Up Mobility Scooter on a Plane?

Using a mobility scooter shouldn’t stop you from travelling to your desired destination! It is possible to take your mobility scooter on a plane, but making the right preparations are key. If you have a fold up mobility scooter you might be thinking, can I take this on the plane with me? Here’s everything you need to know.

Preparing to Take Your Mobility Scooter on a Plane

When travelling from the UK, it’s recommended to inform the airline you’re flying with about your mobility scooter before you leave. If possible, try to do this at least 48 hours before you depart, so staff will be ready for you and can ensure you have the required support throughout your journey.

You have the right to specific assistance at UK and EU airports if you have a sensory, physical or learning disability which affects your mobility. This includes:

  • Help at specific arrival points, such as terminal entrances, at transport interchanges and in car parks
  • Help to reach check-in
  • Help with registration at check-in
  • Help with moving through the airport if you need it, including toilets
  • Help to board the plane

Where Will My Scooter Be Stored in the Plane?

The mobility scooter you choose to travel with will be placed in the plane’s hold. This means you won’t be able to board the plane with your mobility scooter. However, you’ll be provided with a transfer chair at the airport, which will take you to your aisle wheelchair.

It’s important to note that airlines have size restrictions, so ensure you check this before flying.

Which Mobility Scooters Can You Take on a Plane?

It’s important to know which mobility scooters you are permitted on the plane. The Civil Aviation Authority changed regulations on which size lithium-ion batteries are allowed on aircrafts. It is therefore recommended to check with your airline prior to flying to ensure your battery size is compatible with their specific regulations.
