Do I Need a Medical to Drive at 70?

Driving can be complicated at the best of times. That doesn’t always get easier the longer you drive. Many people believe there are countless restrictions on their driving once they get to a certain age. That’s especially true once you turn 70.

It’s easy to see why, as licenses automatically expire once someone gets to 70. One of the main questions you’ll have is if you need a medical to drive at 70. The answer is a little complicated, so it’s worth diving into it.

Do You Need to Renew Your License at 70?

Your driver’s license automatically expires at 70, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop driving. Instead, it means you need to renew your license. If approved, you’ll then have a new license, which you’ll have to renew every three years.

This process should be relatively simple and straightforward. You’ll be expected to take a few additional steps, however. This leads directly into whether you need a medical to drive at 70.

Do Over 70’s Need a Medical to Drive?

Generally, you don’t need to have a medical to drive after 70. Having said that, however, you could need the support of your doctor saying you’re fit to drive. This is why many people believe that they need a complete medical to drive in their 70s. Thankfully, it doesn’t need to be as difficult as you’d think.

Most of this focuses on your eyesight. You’ll usually have to pass an eye exam showing you can see properly. Unless you have any eye conditions, this shouldn’t be too difficult.

Medical Declarations

Medical declarations often need to be made when you’re renewing your driving license in your 70s. These are separate from any kind of medical assessment. This revolves around declaring any medical conditions you have, especially if they can impair your driving.

You need to answer these questions honestly. If it’s found you’re lying, you’ll lose your driving license, and you could be fined up to £1,000. You can also be prosecuted if you’re in an accident.

It’s worth getting a medical check before renewing your license. This isn’t legally mandatory, but it can always be a great step to take. This is especially true if you’re concerned about any conditions that could affect your driving.

Considering Alternatives

With how restrictive driving past the age of 70 can seem, it doesn’t mean you’re out of options. A mobility scooter is an alternative that can allow you to get around, if you can no longer drive. You don’t need a driving license for these, but they can still provide you with the independence needed to see friends, go to the shops and more.

At East Coast Mobility, we offer a range of options, no matter what your budget is. Our wide range of mobility scooters are sure to help you stay mobile and keep the same quality of life. They can even be a great aid when you have specific medical conditions.

From start to finish, the service has been fantastic. From ensuring the reconditioned scooter I purchased was in top condition, to the great delivery experience through to dealing with helpful lady on the phone. I was most grateful for the non pushy sales approach - you gave me time to think. Extra information and assistance was immediately on hand. I cannot fault East Coast Mobility!

Thank you so much for coming to my aid at Beccles Medical Centre. I wish we had more local businesses, and not just the internet for service.

Robert Smith

Just received my Cabin Car back after work done. The service I got was exceptional.

Not only was the work done to a brilliant standard they collected and delivered it too.

Well done East Coast Mobility! I thoroughly recommend them to anyone with mobility scooter problems.

Thank you to all the staff for a first class experience.

Caroline Long

Absolutely brilliant service, while she was very poorly my Mum's stair lift stopped working and got stuck in a doorway in a really awkward place so I called round a few places but most couldn't help very quickly.

East Coast Mobility not only told me how to move it so it wasn't in the way anymore but they also came out the following day and got it fixed with new batteries! Such a relief and all done sooo quickly.

Vinnie Harris

I recently needed to purchase a recliner chair for my mother, I contacted East Coast Mobility having dealt with them before, our needs were sorted over the phone, efficiently, with compassion and delivered within 48 hours.

Despite my mother not keen on a recliner chair she absolutely loves it!

I can't thank Grant and everyone enough at East Coast Mobility for their fantastic help in installing my stairlifts and at an affordable price beating several others I had round.

Giving me back some desperately needed independence for which I thank them with all my heart, they honestly went above and beyond.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending them to anyone that needs help or advice, they really do care.

I feel I must write and say a huge thank you for the service my wife and I received last week when we came to look at new scooters.

We were both very pleased with how comfortable and reliable they are and were pleasantly surprised at the professional approach we received from Grant.

Malcolm Lyell

Excellent service. We needed an engineer late in afternoon to fix my father's stairlift as he could not have got to toilet or bed that night. They left the workshop and attended within 30 mins - fault fixed!

Very helpful and knowledgeable.

Chris Bartlett
